The title of the original TV movie The Night Stalker referred to the villain of the movie, a vampire named Janos Skorzeny. With the series having the title Kolchak: The Night Stalker, Kolchak himself became known as the Night Stalker to the audience. It is similar to the ironic manner in which Frankenstein's Monster took on Frankenstein's name for most people - only in Kolchak's case the man took on the name of the monster.
